HOME OF THE OTHERS

2017

Video installation (two-channel with audio) and construction rests

Variable dimensions / Loop 14’18”

The House of Others (2017) reveals fragments of the daily lives of refugee immigrants in the Baobab camp and in the occupied ruins of an old penicillin factory in the city of Rome.

If immigration produces a spatial and temporal displacement, global politics continues to erect walls and promote temporal and subjective, but substantial and impassable boundaries.

There is no Self that is not also a prison from which to escape and, therefore, there is no Other. If there is no other, there can also be no home for that Other, not even as a way of speaking.

Installation views at MACRO Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome, Johan Jakob Museum Zurich and Galeria Vermelho São Paulo

In “Home of the Others” the use of construction rests on the floor, over which the two long video screens are suspended, is a powerful visual metaphor, dense of implications. It is the tool that activates the participation of the visitors that can walk on it, while at the same time speaks about the difficult situation of the refugees and more in general of the poor condition of Housing these days…
